Delinquency and service protection

Understand the shut-off process before it reaches your door

The safest time to ask about a past-due balance, payment arrangement, or hardship protection is before the final notice. This page translates the provider’s published rules into a practical checklist.

Notice and timing

How delinquency is handled

Grace period after the due date

15 days after issue; Yuma Code §193-71 says bills unpaid 15 days after issue are delinquent and service may be discontinued.

Late-fee calculation

Bills unpaid by the next billing cycle receive a $20 delinquency fee. A bill referred for collection receives a 20% collection fee on the outstanding balance, and 1.5% monthly interest is charged from referral to the collection agency.

Disconnection timeline

On day 15 after bill issue the account is delinquent and water or sewer service may be discontinued. If unpaid by the next billing cycle, the $20 delinquency fee is added. For reconnection after nonpayment or a returned payment, all billed amounts and delinquent, returned-item and reconnection fees must be paid; an after-hours fee applies after 5:00 p.m. or before 8:00 a.m. weekdays and on weekends or holidays.

Statutory warning protocol

What notice should you expect?

The reviewed City code and utility pages establish delinquency and discontinuation authority but do not publish a universal sequence of mailed notices, automated calls, text messages, emails or door hangers before physical shutoff. Customers should monitor myUMA and contact Customer Service at (928) 373-5076 immediately when a bill is past due.

If a notice seems wrong

Document the account balance, payment confirmation, notice date, and any household medical or accessibility concern. Then call the provider using the contact information on its official bill or profile before the stated deadline.

Restoring service

Reconnection costs and timing

The City requires all billed balances and applicable delinquent, returned-payment and reconnection fees before restoring service. An additional after-hours fee is charged after 5:00 p.m. or before 8:00 a.m. weekdays and for weekend or holiday requests, but the reviewed current pages do not publish the dollar amounts for either standard or after-hours reconnection.

Need a payment arrangement?

Ask before the shut-off date

Tell the customer-service representative that you are responding to a delinquency notice and ask specifically about installment plans, hardship protection, charity referrals, and the amount required to stop the disconnection order.

Customer protection guide

What to do when a bill becomes urgent

A delinquency notice from City of Yuma Utilities Department - Water and Wastewater should be treated as a time-sensitive account document. Read the exact due date, amount required, notice method, and contact instructions on the notice, then compare them with the provider details in this guide.

If you have already paid, gather the confirmation number and posting date. If you cannot pay the full amount, call before the stated shut-off date and ask about arrangements, hardship protections, agency referrals, and the minimum amount needed to pause action.

Keep the conversation specific: ask what will stop the order, when the payment must post, whether a reconnection fee applies, and whether the utility requires a separate request for medical, accessibility, or household-protection status.
