Payment channels

Pay San Jose Water Company (SJW), a subsidiary of SJW Group

Use the provider’s verified online, telephone, mail, or counter instructions. Check the final confirmation screen for the amount, processing date, and any transaction fee before submitting.

Primary online route

Use the official payment portal

The direct portal is the fastest route when it is available. The provider identifies its payment gateway as Invoice Cloud, which SJW identifies as its payment-technology partner and the host of the current SJWaterHUB payment experience. SJW’s current payment page says the portal supports electronic notifications, AutoPay, paperless billing, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and Venmo.. Never enter account credentials into a lookalike site reached through an unsolicited message.

Telephone payment

Phone IVR

1-877-401-0085 — San Jose Water’s free automated payment service, available 24 hours a day. Customers need the ten-digit SJW account number and, for bank-account payment, the routing and checking or savings account numbers. General customer service is 408-279-7900 during weekday call-center hours; the company’s contact page also lists that number for 24-hour customer service and emergency assistance.

Have your account number and payment instrument ready. Follow the provider’s recorded prompts and retain the confirmation number.

Alternative channels

Mail, text, and in-person payment instructions

Pay by text

San Jose Water’s current SJWaterHUB FAQ retains a Pay by Text option: enroll through the portal’s payment features, then receive a text when a new bill is generated; following the text link opens a payment page. The current public FAQ does not publish a dedicated SMS short code or keyword, so customers should enroll from SJWaterHUB or call 408-279-7900 rather than text an unverified number. PromisePay separately sends legitimate invitation/reminder texts to eligible customers with past-due balances of at least $100, and those messages can be opted out of through PromisePay.

Mail-in address

San Jose Water, P.O. Box 7045, Pasadena, CA 91109-7045. SJW states that a Southern California banking partner handles remittances at this address; customers should include the payment stub and account information and should not mail cash.

Counters, drop boxes, and office hours

The San Jose Water customer-service office at 110 West Taylor Street, San Jose, CA 95110-2131 is closed to walk-in customers, but a check-only payment drop box is located outside that office. For cash payments, SJW directs customers to CheckFreePay, with more than 20 community locations listed through the company’s CheckFree locator; payment hours and accepted instruments vary by retail location. SJW’s call center is generally available Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and is closed 1:00–3:00 p.m. on the second Friday of each month.

Accepted digital instruments

What you can use online

The current SJWaterHUB/InvoiceCloud materials list Visa, MasterCard, American Express, EFT/ACH, PayPal, Venmo, Google Pay, and Apple Pay. SJW allows automatic payments and scheduled payments; PromisePay plans accept credit/debit or prepaid cards, ACH, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. PromisePay charges $1.50 per ACH-plan transaction and no transaction fee for card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay plan payments. The regular SJW portal limits digital-card transactions to $1,000 per transaction, while checking or savings payments have no stated maximum.

2026 transaction pricing

Convenience fees

No convenience fee is added to ordinary SJW water-bill payments in the current portal FAQ, as stated effective January 2025. PromisePay payment-plan ACH transactions separately carry a $1.50 transaction fee; card, Apple Pay, and Google Pay PromisePay transactions have no transaction fee.

Fees can vary by payment type, channel, account class, and processor terms. The checkout screen is the final fee disclosure.

Payment guidance

Choose the payment channel that fits your deadline

The safest payment path is the one published by San Jose Water Company (SJW), a subsidiary of SJW Group and matched to the account information on your bill. Online portals are convenient, but telephone, mail, counter, and drop-box options may follow different posting schedules and may use different fees.

For a routine payment, save the final confirmation page or IVR number and check when the transaction will post. For a same-day shut-off notice, do not assume that submitting a card payment automatically stops a field order; ask the provider what amount and confirmation are required.

Never send your account number, password, card details, or bank information to Water Ledger. Those details belong only on the provider’s verified payment channel or at an authorized counter.
