Payment channels

Pay Cambridge Water Department

Use the provider’s verified online, telephone, mail, or counter instructions. Check the final confirmation screen for the amount, processing date, and any transaction fee before submitting.

Primary online route

Use the official payment portal

The direct portal is the fastest route when it is available. The provider identifies its payment gateway as City of Cambridge third-party online bill-pay merchant; the reviewed page does not name the processor. Never enter account credentials into a lookalike site reached through an unsolicited message.

Telephone payment

Phone IVR

(617) 314-8226 Interactive Voice Response; balance checks are free and a $0.95 fee applies to payments. Water Department emergency line is (617) 349-4770.

Have your account number and payment instrument ready. Follow the provider’s recorded prompts and retain the confirmation number.

Alternative channels

Mail, text, and in-person payment instructions

Pay by text

No Cambridge text-to-pay keyword or enrollment workflow is published. The City offers IVR, online one-time payment, bank-account payment, and quarterly bill messages; customers should use the official payment page rather than treating water-department alert contact information as payment authorization.

Mail-in address

Tax Collector's Office, City of Cambridge, P.O. Box 399142, Cambridge, MA 02139-9142. Make checks payable to The City of Cambridge and write the water account number on the check.

Counters, drop boxes, and office hours

Cambridge City Hall/Finance service location, 795 Massachusetts Avenue, 1st Floor, Cambridge, MA 02139. Hours are Monday 8:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and Friday 8:30 a.m.-noon. A payment mailbox is installed at the rear of City Hall; checks and money orders are preferred. Water Department operations are at 250 Fresh Pond Parkway, with the Water Department hours listed separately.

Accepted digital instruments

What you can use online

Online utility payments accept MasterCard, Discover, and American Express credit cards, consumer-logo debit cards, and electronic check/ACH. The IVR accepts keypad payment. U.S. cards, debit cards, and checking accounts are accepted; Visa is not listed for utility water bills on the City's fee table. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and text-to-pay were not identified.

2026 transaction pricing

Convenience fees

Online credit/debit card fee is 2.95% with a $1.95 minimum; e-check/ACH is $0.40 per transaction. IVR payment adds a $0.95 payment fee, while balance checks are free. The fee is assessed by the third-party merchant and appears as a separate charge.

Fees can vary by payment type, channel, account class, and processor terms. The checkout screen is the final fee disclosure.

Payment guidance

Choose the payment channel that fits your deadline

The safest payment path is the one published by Cambridge Water Department and matched to the account information on your bill. Online portals are convenient, but telephone, mail, counter, and drop-box options may follow different posting schedules and may use different fees.

For a routine payment, save the final confirmation page or IVR number and check when the transaction will post. For a same-day shut-off notice, do not assume that submitting a card payment automatically stops a field order; ask the provider what amount and confirmation are required.

Never send your account number, password, card details, or bank information to Water Ledger. Those details belong only on the provider’s verified payment channel or at an authorized counter.
