Notice and timing
How delinquency is handled
Grace period after the due date
25 days after the billed date; if payment is not received by day 25, Salem mails a past-due reminder on day 26 or the next business day and gives an additional 7 days to pay.
Late-fee calculation
The reviewed Salem fee schedule did not expose a percentage late charge. It lists a $35 dishonored-payment fee, while the published 2026 service-disconnection-for-nonpayment line is $0.00. Past-due customers remain responsible for the balance and associated fees specified on the account notice.
Disconnection timeline
Bill due 25 days after the billed date; on day 26 or the next business day a reminder notice provides 7 additional days; if still unpaid, Salem mails a past-due letter warning of potential shutoff or collections and specifying a deadline. Failure to meet that deadline may cause shutoff or referral. After shutoff, the past-due balance and all associated fees must be paid, and same-day restoration requires payment received by 5 p.m. Monday-Friday; later payments are processed the next business day depending on whether the meter is off, locked, or pulled.
