Alternative channels

Mail, text, and in-person payment instructions

Pay by text

MLGW offers text alerts rather than a text-to-pay transaction channel. Enroll through My Account or text Join to MLGW4U (654948). The service sends billing-due and scheduled-cutoff alerts, normally about three business days before the relevant date when a balance is due. Text STOP cancels and HELP requests assistance; carrier messaging charges may apply. MLGW warns that balances can lag recent payments or adjustments and that failure to receive an alert does not excuse timely payment. PowerPay and My Account may also send account, payment, balance, and pending-disconnect notifications, but customers should not treat those alerts as a substitute for the bill.

Mail-in address

Memphis Light, Gas and Water - Payments & Banking, P.O. Box 388, Memphis, TN 38145-0388. MLGW asks customers to write the 16-digit account number on the check and include the payment stub; do not mail cash and allow approximately 3-5 business days for posting.

Counters, drop boxes, and office hours

MLGW's current contact page lists the Main/Downtown Office at 245 South Main Street, generally Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for LIHEAP appointments; the South Community Office at 2935 Lamar Avenue, Monday-Thursday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Friday until 6:00 p.m.; the Whitehaven Community Office at 1111 East Shelby Drive, Monday-Thursday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Friday until 6:00 p.m.; and the Millington Community Office at 5131 Navy Road, Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., listed as closed for renovation until summer 2026. MLGW's payment comparison page says community-office teller payments accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, debit cards, cash, checks, and money orders and post immediately; current office pages should be checked before travel because renovation, holiday, and appointment restrictions change. Main and South locations have drop-box/drive-through facilities described in MLGW's payment-location material. Authorized MLGW paying agents throughout Shelby County accept cash, check, or money order, commonly post by the next business day, and may charge up to $2; unauthorized agents can take 3-5 business days or longer and are at the customer's risk.

Payment guidance

Choose the payment channel that fits your deadline

The safest payment path is the one published by Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division (MLGW) and matched to the account information on your bill. Online portals are convenient, but telephone, mail, counter, and drop-box options may follow different posting schedules and may use different fees.

For a routine payment, save the final confirmation page or IVR number and check when the transaction will post. For a same-day shut-off notice, do not assume that submitting a card payment automatically stops a field order; ask the provider what amount and confirmation are required.

Never send your account number, password, card details, or bank information to Water Ledger. Those details belong only on the provider’s verified payment channel or at an authorized counter.
