Delinquency and service protection

Understand the shut-off process before it reaches your door

The safest time to ask about a past-due balance, payment arrangement, or hardship protection is before the final notice. This page translates the provider’s published rules into a practical checklist.

Notice and timing

How delinquency is handled

Grace period after the due date

Bills are due 21 days after the billing date. A second notice for a past-due account is mailed 14 days after the due date and carries the published delinquency process; the reviewed FAQ does not describe a separate grace period after that notice.

Late-fee calculation

AWWD's FAQ states that a second past-due notice includes a 10% late fee. The District's fee schedule also lists a $75 delinquent-account service-disconnection fee effective January 1, 2025. Customers should pay the undisputed balance and contact Customer Service before the second notice or final notice becomes a field-disconnection order.

Disconnection timeline

Day 0 is the bimonthly billing date and payment is due on day 21. A second past-due notice is mailed approximately 14 days after the due date and includes a 10% late fee. A final/disconnect notice follows about one week after the next utility billing notice under the District's FAQ wording; accounts remaining unpaid by the due date of the second utility bill are disconnected. The District charges its delinquent-account service-disconnection fee and restoration requires scheduling a meter unlock.

Statutory warning protocol

What notice should you expect?

AWWD uses mailed account notices: the bill, a second past-due notice about 14 days after the due date, and a final/disconnect notice associated with the next billing cycle. The reviewed FAQ does not identify automated call or SMS sequences, colored paper, or a door-hanger requirement. Customers should keep their mailing address current and contact Customer Service at (425) 743-4605 if a notice is missing.

If a notice seems wrong

Document the account balance, payment confirmation, notice date, and any household medical or accessibility concern. Then call the provider using the contact information on its official bill or profile before the stated deadline.

Restoring service

Reconnection costs and timing

AWWD's fee schedule lists a $75 delinquent-account service-disconnection fee. After payment or an approved arrangement, the District states that a locked meter generally requires 2-3 business days to unlock; the reviewed customer pages do not publish a separate after-hours restoration price. An initial $15 account setup or occupancy name-change service charge may also appear, and customers should obtain the current unlock amount and scheduling instructions from Customer Service.

Need a payment arrangement?

Ask before the shut-off date

Tell the customer-service representative that you are responding to a delinquency notice and ask specifically about installment plans, hardship protection, charity referrals, and the amount required to stop the disconnection order.

Customer protection guide

What to do when a bill becomes urgent

A delinquency notice from Alderwood Water & Wastewater District should be treated as a time-sensitive account document. Read the exact due date, amount required, notice method, and contact instructions on the notice, then compare them with the provider details in this guide.

If you have already paid, gather the confirmation number and posting date. If you cannot pay the full amount, call before the stated shut-off date and ask about arrangements, hardship protections, agency referrals, and the minimum amount needed to pause action.

Keep the conversation specific: ask what will stop the order, when the payment must post, whether a reconnection fee applies, and whether the utility requires a separate request for medical, accessibility, or household-protection status.
