Delinquency and service protection

Understand the shut-off process before it reaches your door

The safest time to ask about a past-due balance, payment arrangement, or hardship protection is before the final notice. This page translates the provider’s published rules into a practical checklist.

Notice and timing

How delinquency is handled

Grace period after the due date

Bills are due 25 days after the monthly billing date, followed by a 20-day grace period before a late charge. The City states that the 10% penalty is charged on day 46 from the billing date.

Late-fee calculation

A 10% penalty is added on the 46th day from the billing date. If water is disconnected, the account receives a $60 disconnection fee; restored service requires full payment by cash or guaranteed funds, and checks are not accepted for the disconnected account. A $90 after-hours restoration fee applies when service is restored after 3:00 p.m.

Disconnection timeline

Day 0 is the monthly billing date; bills are due day 25. A 10% penalty posts on day 46, and a late notice is mailed ten days before water disconnection. If the balance remains unpaid, service is disconnected at the meter, a $60 fee is added, and the account continues to accrue the regular monthly utility charges.

Statutory warning protocol

What notice should you expect?

Renton sends a late notice approximately ten days before the scheduled disconnection, allowing the customer to call Utility Billing at 425-430-6852 and make arrangements. Customers who anticipate a shutoff should contact the City during business hours to confirm payment; liens may be filed for continuing delinquency.

If a notice seems wrong

Document the account balance, payment confirmation, notice date, and any household medical or accessibility concern. Then call the provider using the contact information on its official bill or profile before the stated deadline.

Restoring service

Reconnection costs and timing

The standard disconnection/reconnection fee is $60. If service is restored after 3:00 p.m., the additional after-hours fee is $90. The full account balance must be paid with cash or guaranteed funds before restoration.

Need a payment arrangement?

Ask before the shut-off date

Tell the customer-service representative that you are responding to a delinquency notice and ask specifically about installment plans, hardship protection, charity referrals, and the amount required to stop the disconnection order.

Customer protection guide

What to do when a bill becomes urgent

A delinquency notice from City of Renton Utilities - Water Utility should be treated as a time-sensitive account document. Read the exact due date, amount required, notice method, and contact instructions on the notice, then compare them with the provider details in this guide.

If you have already paid, gather the confirmation number and posting date. If you cannot pay the full amount, call before the stated shut-off date and ask about arrangements, hardship protections, agency referrals, and the minimum amount needed to pause action.

Keep the conversation specific: ask what will stop the order, when the payment must post, whether a reconnection fee applies, and whether the utility requires a separate request for medical, accessibility, or household-protection status.
