Delinquency and service protection

Understand the shut-off process before it reaches your door

The safest time to ask about a past-due balance, payment arrangement, or hardship protection is before the final notice. This page translates the provider’s published rules into a practical checklist.

Notice and timing

How delinquency is handled

Grace period after the due date

28 days from the date the bill is rendered before the $10 late fee applies; the bill is considered delinquent under Sunrise’s current payment policy after 21 days of issuance.

Late-fee calculation

A flat $10 late fee is imposed on bills not paid in full within 28 days of the rendering date. The fee becomes part of the unpaid balance. A customer who disputes a bill must raise the dispute within 45 days from rendering or forfeits the stated right to contest the correctness at a later time.

Disconnection timeline

The bill is delinquent after 21 days of issuance; if payment is not received within 45 days of billing, water and gas service are subject to disconnection. The City attempts reconnection within 24 hours after full payment of past-due amounts and service charges, and seeks same-day service when possible.

Statutory warning protocol

What notice should you expect?

If a bill is not paid before the City issues the next monthly bill, the next statement includes a delinquency notice and a date by which payment must be received to prevent interruption. Sunrise’s public policy does not specify an automated call, text, or door-hanger sequence; customers must monitor the mailed statement and contact Public Service promptly.

If a notice seems wrong

Document the account balance, payment confirmation, notice date, and any household medical or accessibility concern. Then call the provider using the contact information on its official bill or profile before the stated deadline.

Restoring service

Reconnection costs and timing

The standard water disconnection/reconnection charge is $50. If water service was disconnected within the preceding six months, the charge increases to $70. Sunrise attempts restoration within 24 hours after full payment; after-hours reconnection is handled through the published after-hours numbers, but the public January 2026 sheet does not state a separate after-hours premium.

Need a payment arrangement?

Ask before the shut-off date

Tell the customer-service representative that you are responding to a delinquency notice and ask specifically about installment plans, hardship protection, charity referrals, and the amount required to stop the disconnection order.

Customer protection guide

What to do when a bill becomes urgent

A delinquency notice from City of Sunrise Public Service – Water, Wastewater and Utility Billing should be treated as a time-sensitive account document. Read the exact due date, amount required, notice method, and contact instructions on the notice, then compare them with the provider details in this guide.

If you have already paid, gather the confirmation number and posting date. If you cannot pay the full amount, call before the stated shut-off date and ask about arrangements, hardship protections, agency referrals, and the minimum amount needed to pause action.

Keep the conversation specific: ask what will stop the order, when the payment must post, whether a reconnection fee applies, and whether the utility requires a separate request for medical, accessibility, or household-protection status.
