- Meter reading
- NSBU's service territory is divided into 82 water/electric meter-reading zones. Meter readers gather data from several zones each day and upload it to the billing system; bills are mailed approximately three days later. The utility's billing page describes this scheduled field-reading process but does not state a universal AMI transmission interval.
- New-account deposit
- For a 5/8-inch residential account, the February 1, 2026 tariff lists a $45 water deposit and $75 wastewater deposit; a 3/4-inch reclaimed-water deposit is $20. New customers receive a Social Security-number credit verification and may or may not need a deposit. Returning customers with at least six months' history and no more than two late fees, no nonpayment disconnection and no returned checks in the prior 24 months are not required to pay a deposit. Residential deposits may be credited after 24 consecutive billings meeting the no-disconnection, delinquency and returned-check conditions; interest is credited monthly.
- Activation or transfer fee
- Applications may be made by phone, online or in person. The 2026 tariff lists a $35 service request fee, a $850 5/8-inch residential water-meter setting installation charge, and a minimum $2,425 new water tap-in installation charge when applicable, in addition to capital connection fees. Specific transfer fees depend on the requested service and property.
