A high bill does not automatically qualify for a credit. This page states only the provider-specific emergency, leak, or assistance details identified in public material.

1

Stop active water loss

Use the provider’s emergency route for public-side issues and a qualified repair route for private plumbing.

2

Preserve the evidence

Keep dated readings, photographs, parts receipts, contractor invoices, and proof that usage returned to normal.

3

Ask for the exact policy

Confirm the form, filing deadline, eligible repairs, calculation method, and payment expectation during review.

The notes below may document a route, rule, or explicit public-information limit. General preparation steps are not represented as utility policy.

Emergency reporting route
Electric and water/wastewater emergency: 512-393-8300. A customer-bill sample also identifies the Water Emergency Number as 512-393-8010; use the City's current emergency routing for a main break or water-quality crisis.
Leak-adjustment policy
Customer Connect can show daily/monthly water thresholds and usage history, and the City offers threshold notifications at 150, 250, 350, 1,500, or 20,000 daily gallons and 5,000, 7,500, or 9,999 monthly gallons. The reviewed public pages do not publish a universal hidden-leak credit formula or repair-receipt cap; customers should report the event and request a billing review.
Utility assistance program
San Marcos assistance is available to active SMTX Utilities customers who meet at least one criterion such as household income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level, age 60 or older, disability, veteran status, or a child under five. Qualified customers may receive help up to four times per fiscal year, covering the current bill and up to 60 days of past-due charges and late fees; deposits and connection/after-hours/tampering fees are excluded.
State and federal aid connection
The City partners with Business and Community Lenders of Texas, Community Action Inc. of Central Texas, Communities in Schools, and the Salvation Army of San Marcos. It also directs residents to St. Vincent de Paul, Hays Helping Hands, and other agencies; the reviewed page does not publish a direct Texas LIHWAP URL. Utility Assistance staff can be reached through the City program.
